Introduction

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa is a grassroots initiative that was started in response to the call for solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and their allies who are resisting the Coastal GasLink pipeline. The pipeline runs through Wet’suwet’en traditional territories without the consent of the Hereditary Chiefs, in defiance of their long-standing legal opposition. The Unist’ot’en Camp, set up in 2009 to protect their territories, has been particularly vocal in its opposition to the project. The situation came to a head in early 2020 when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began making arrests and using violence against Wet’suwet’en land defenders and their supporters. In response, allies across Canada have been organizing support actions in Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en.

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa is part of a national network of convoys organized in cities across Canada. We are committed to anti-colonial, decolonial, disability justice, transformative justice, and Indigenous sovereignty principles and practices. Our Convoy is made up of folks from a wide range of communities and backgrounds who share a desire to stand in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and communities defending their lands from resource extraction projects.

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa

The convoy of around 50 vehicles left the DetahSyde community around midday on Saturday, June 13, 2020, headed towards an unknown destination. The group had been preparing for their departure for weeks, stockpiling supplies and making final preparations. The convoy is made up of a wide variety of vehicles, including RVs, trailers, vans, buses, and cars. The group is diverse, with a range of ages, backgrounds, and experiences.

Who We Are

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa is a grassroots organization made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people from all walks of life. We are committed to standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Wet’suwet’en, Unist’ot’en, and all Nations defending their traditional territories against the Coastal GasLink pipeline.

We are inspired by the resiliency of Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, Elders, women, men, and youth who have been on the frontlines of this struggle since construction began in 2010. They have shown us what it looks like to protect the land and water without surrendering or signing away their rights. They have reminded us that we all have a responsibility to defend the Earth.

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa is part of a growing movement of people across Turtle Island who are using whatever resources we have at our disposal to support Wet’suwet’en land defenders and stand in solidarity with Indigenous-led resistance to the pipeline.

To Bring Awareness To The Public

The Freedom Convoy Ottawa would like to bring awareness to the public of the conditions and treatment of animals in the many different facets of society. We are an organization that is 100% run by volunteers. From administrative costs, to gas and maintenance of our vehicles, every dollar goes back into helping the animals. We are currently focusing on farmed animals and their unimaginably horrific conditions, but will be expanding to helping all companion animals in need, as well as working towards ending wildlife captivity. Won’t you join us in this worthy cause?
