Location
Ottawa is a city in, and the county seat of, Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It is located on the Marais des Cygnes River in the eastern central part of Franklin County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,649.
The city was named for the Ottawa tribe of Native Americans which inhabited the area. Initially settled by New England Yankees as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, Ottawa became an incorporated city in 1865. It is notable that Ottawa Indian Chief Joseph Legionnaire is buried in Ancient Burial Ground north of town. On the second Monday in October, Ottawa hosts an annual “Trail Days” celebration to commemorate the influence of this period with a parade and other special events.
In 1867, Ottawa became home to Baker University, which was the first university west of Missouri River and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
In 1869 it was platted out by Edwin C. Ottiwell and renamed Ottawa by John Hargitt; it had also been previously known as Ottiwell and Tecumseh
