The first recorded history of Ottawa began with the French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle in 1682. La Salle was on a mission to find the Northwest Passage to China and India. He named the Marais des Cygnes River after seeing wild swans along its banks; Marais des Cygnes translates to “marsh of the swans.” The area became part of the French dominion in 1763 after France lost the Seven Years’ War to Great Britain. The Osage Indians occupied this area until 1808 when they agreed to move west of the Mississippi River under pressure from American expansion.
Geography
Ottawa is located in the northeastern part of Kansas at the confluence of the Marais des Cygnes and Delaware rivers. It is about an hour’s drive from Kansas City and Topeka, and two hours from Wichita.The city has a total area of 11.73 square miles (30.39 km2), of which 11.68 square miles (30.27 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.12 km2) is water.
