The original Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators began play in the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 1992-93 season. The team was founded as an expansion franchise, and was the first NHL team based in Ottawa since the original Ottawa Senators ceased operations after the 1934 season. The Senators play their home games at the Canadian Tire Centre, which opened in 1996.
The origins of the Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators began play in the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917 as an expansion team. They were originally based in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. The team was founded by a group of local businessmen, led by Frank Ahearn and Tommy Gorman. The Senators played their first game against the Montreal Canadiens on December 19, 1917, and won 3-0.
The Senators were one of the most successful teams in the early years of the NHL, winning three Stanley Cups between 1920 and 1927. However, the team’s fortunes began to decline in the late 1920s, and they were forced to sell off some of their best players due to financial difficulties. The team continued to struggle throughout the 1930s, and they failed to make the playoffs for 10 straight seasons from 1931 to 1941.
The Senators’ fortunes began to turn around during World War II, as many of their players joined the Canadian military or were otherwise unavailable to play hockey. The team made it back to the playoffs in 1942-43, but they were eliminated in the first round.
After the war ended, the Senators’ struggles resumed. They bottomed out in 1950-51, when they won just 12 games and finished last in the NHL standings. The following year, they moved from Ottawa to St. Louis, Missouri and became known as the St. Louis Eagles. The Eagles only lasted one season in St. Louis before folding due to financial problems

The original Ottawa Senators were founded in 1883 as an amateur men’s hockey team and became a charter member of the NHL in 1917. The team played in the NHL from 1917 until 1934, when they were sold and relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. The current Ottawa Senators franchise was reborn in 1992, and has used the same logo since its inception.
The original Senators logo was a simple black ‘O’ with white trim. The ‘O’ represented both the city’s name and its status as the nation’s capital. In 1917, when the team joined the NHL, a white ‘S’ was added inside the ‘O’, representing both the team’s name and its status as an NHL expansion club. This logo was used until 1934, when it was replaced by a new logo featuring a Native Canadian chief.
In 1992, when the current Ottawa Senators franchise was founded, it chose to revive the original Senators logo as its own. The only difference between the two logos is that the new version features a modernized font. The current Ottawa Senators logo is thus a direct tribute to the history and tradition of one of hockey’s most storied franchises.
The modern Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Canada. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The franchise was founded in 1992 as an expansion team, and has since undergone several name changes. The team has played at the Canadian Tire Centre since their inaugural season.
The return of the Ottawa Senators
In 1992, the Ottawa Senators were born as an expansion franchise in the National Hockey League. The team was named after the original Ottawa Senators, which was one of the most successful teams in early NHL history, winning 11 Stanley Cups between 1903 and 1927. The new Senators logo was a nod to the past, with two defending lions flanking a shield that featured three stars to represent the three different divisions in the NHL at that time.
The 1990s were a tough decade for the Senators, as they failed to make the playoffs in their first seven seasons. But things began to turn around in the late 1990s, and by 2001-02, they were one of the best teams in the league. They made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final that year, only to lose to the mighty Detroit Red Wings in five games.
In 2007, after another disappointing season, the Senators made a big change: they dropped the “old-timey” look and went with a more modern logo. The new logo was very sleek and simple, with a capital S inside a red circle. It was a big change from their previous look, but it seemed to reflect the team’s new identity: a young and hungry squad that was ready to take on the league.
The new logo didn’t bring immediate success on the ice, as the team missed the playoffs again in 2007-08. But they rebounded in 2008-09, winning their first Southeast Division title. They followed that up with another division title in 2009-10 and finally made it back to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010-11, where they lost to… you guessed it…the Detroit Red Wings again.
The Ottawa Senators are currently in rebuilding mode, but with their rich history and passionate fans, there’s no doubt that they’ll be back on top soon enough.
The modern Ottawa Senators logo
The current Ottawa Senators logo was introduced in 2006. It features a Roman style senator wearing a toga with the team’s wordmark ‘SENATORS’ above it. The team nickname is written on a banner below the senator. The word mark and the senator are both encased in a shield. This shield is inspired by the Canadian Royal Arms and has maple leaves on either side. The shield is white and silver with black trim. The colors of the logo represent the official colors of Canada.
The Roman senator in the logo is a nod to historical figures such as Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a famous Roman statesman, and Marcus Aurelius, a philosopher-emperor of Rome. It also represents the Senate of Canada, which is located in Ottawa. The maple leaves in the shield are a symbol of Canada and represent the many Maple trees that grow across the country.
